Computer programmers are the new rock stars.
They are the brilliant operational core of all revolutionary technology, and they are changing the world irrevocably with every new line of successfully written code.
Suffice it to say, computer coding is one of the most important technological developments ever. So here are the top 10 computer programmers of all time.
10. Rasums Lerdorf
Rasums Lerdorf is the creator of the PHP script language. More than 34 percent of the websites on the World Wide Web use the most recent versions of PHP.
9. Sergey Brin
Sergey Brin co-founded Google with Larry Page. Brin and Page first met in 1995 while Brin was showing newer students, including Page, around the Stanford Campus. Brin and Page developed the PageRank algorithm together while studying at Stanford.
8. Larry Page
Larry Page co-founded Google working alongside Sergey Brin. He currently serves as CEO for Google. He began working on the early stages of Google with Brin while earning his Ph.D. at Stanford.
7. Linus Torvalds
Linus is a project coordinator, hacker and software engineer who was responsible for developing the Linux kernel. Linux is a free, open-source operating system that is supported by over 20 different platforms. Linus won the Millennium Technology Prize in 2012, and has been recognized by the Internet Hall of Fame.
6. Steve Wozniak
Wozniak worked alongside Steve Jobs developing circuit boards, operating systems and hardware for Apple-1. Wozniak also developed Apple-2, the first personal computer with color graphics running on Integer BASIC programming.
5. Ken Thompson
Ken Thompson received the Turing award with Ritchie for inventing and developing the UNIX system in 1983. Ken is another one of the prominent pioneers of the computer science and hacker community. He initially invented the “B” program language, and later on he co-developed the Go program language while working for Google.
4. Brian Kernighan
Kernighan co-developed the UNIX Operating System along with Ritchie and Ken Thompson whom he also worked with at Bell Labs. Kernighan also invented the acronym WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get). This Princeton Computer Science programmer also co-authored the AMPL and AWK programming languages.
3. Bjarne Stroustrup
Bjarne Stroustrup worked alongside Ritchie co-developing the “C” programming language. The Danish computer programmer has been credited with creating the C++ program language.
2. Dennis Ritchie
Dennis Ritchie played a pivotal role in developing “C” programming language and the UNIX Operating System. He was employed by Bell Labs and Alcatel-Lucent. He received the National Medal of Technology in 1999 from President Clinton.
1. Tim Berners-Lee
Tim Berners-Lee tops the list because he was the inventor of the World Wide Web and HTML. He also achieved the first successful HTTP communication online. He currently holds the Founders Chair at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
