The time to start is now!

Much has been written about the need to, as Nike so bluntly puts it, just do it! To draw on another great piece of advice, it is important to remember that, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Thanks for that Mark!

These are not just romantic ways to look at life and justify taking on the unknown, this is real life advice. The cliche that you must make mistakes in order to learn is a fact. Some call mistakes trouble shooting, others call it failure but in the end, doing and learning is the only way to gain experience and knowledge. Every experience contributes to your character, your knowledge and ultimately makes you better prepared to make the next move and take on the next experience.

Going for it in life does not mean living impulsively but you cannot plan every last detail either. It’s a balance and you learn to find that balance by, you got it, trying different things. And while Mr. Twain emphasizes the importance to dream, make sure your feet are still firmly planted in reality. In other words, make sure to dream, and have the courage to go after those dreams knowing it will take hard work. It is important to understand there is absolutely no substitute for hard work.

If you want to change your life, or an aspect of it, you can start now. Ask yourself what you want, how you define happiness and what success looks like to you. Make a plan, a realistic one, and set a timeframe for hitting personal deadlines. Whether it’s updating your resume this week and applying for jobs the next or creating a business plan and doing market research, the only thing holding you back is you. So go for it!
