Looking For A Clever Way To Optimize Your Job Search?

Are you currently on the hunt for a dream job? Well, you aren’t alone. According to the U.S. Bureau of Statistics, the official unemployment rate in the United States is 5%. This means that when you apply for an open position, you really need to stand out from the crowd.
Adding a new skill, like learning how to code, is one way to improve your chances of being considered for a new job. Alternately, you could follow in the footsteps of one recent Wyncode Academy graduate who hacked the job search process to make his hunt for a dream job a bit more manageable.
Juan Ortiz, who graduated from Wyncode’s Miami Beach campus, built a bot that automatically ranks and applies to jobs for him based on an algorithm he developed which matches open job positions with his skillset. Read our Q&A with Juan to learn all about why and how he built this amazing bot and to find out how potential employers are reacting to the process.
What inspired you to create this bot?
The bot was originally an idea from our campus instructor, Auston Bunsen. He challenged someone in the class to implement it and I decided to take it to practice and test my abilities. I also received collaboration from a fellow student from my cohort, Rodney Perez.
How does the bot work?
The job hunter gets the jobs from indeed.com that are labeled as easy to apply. It then runs an algorithm with the requirements for that position against an approximation of my skillset. It identifies as a match the jobs that get a score above 40%. After that, along with my application information, it sends a personalized cover letter to the company that it’s applying to explaining who I am and why they are receiving it.
How long did it take for you to build?
It took around a week to build it. Right now I’m adding the capability to get jobs from a startup jobs site, www.angel.co.
What particular challenges did you face while building this bot/algorithm?
Scraping through the websites was definitely the most challenging part.
Is the bot currently live? How many jobs has it applied to for you?
It is currently on job-diana.herokuapp.com. It has applied to close to 200 jobs around the USA.
Are there specific positions, companies, or locations that you are most interested in? What is your dream job?
I’ve come to enjoy the backend development. I would like to stay in Miami or in an area that has similar weather. I want to become a CTO for a successful company.
What has been the response from employers? Response from the public?
It has had mixed reviews. I’ve received notifications from employers congratulating me on it and others have just written telling me that they do not want ‘bot applications’. I was expecting this.
Did you have any coding experience before you began Wyncode?
I had very basic programming knowledge.
What was your Wyncode experience like?
It was an engaging experience, which required a lot of time and effort. I spent a big chunk of those weeks at the campus. I was mentally prepared for it, and now, I feel like I need to keep on working every day to get better as a developer.
What are you most excited about now that you are an official Wyncode graduate?
I am excited to continue to grow as a developer while applying the knowledge that I’ve acquired the last couple of months on exciting new products.
How did you celebrate graduating from Wyncode?
Our awesome campus director had a plan prepared for us and took us out to a couple of places here in Miami. We were all finally able to relax and enjoy for some time for a job well done. It was great.
