The domain name for your company’s website is likely the first impression potential customers will have of your business. And we all know how important first impressions are!

Furthermore, in the digital age that we now live in, a domain name is just as important in relation to overall brand as a business name. Your domain name is also the gateway to your online presence for search engine crawlers.

The perfect domain name can instill confidence in your business and brand, which can lead to establishing your company as a leader in your respective field. On the flip side, a poorly picked domain name can cause alarm for potential customers and can lead to you having a permanent marketing disadvantage for your business.

For these reasons and much more, it should be obvious to you that picking the best domain name for your business is essential for ensuring future success. But, picking a domain name may seem like a daunting task because you may assume that all of the “good” domain names have already been taken. However, since every business is unique, we can safely conclude that there remains plenty of relevant, compelling, and marketable domain names available that would be perfect for your business.

With all of this in mind, here are some tips and tricks to help you pick the perfect domain name for your business!

Top tips on choosing the perfect domain name for your business.

Make it unique.
You don’t want to give people an excuse to avoid, forget, or make fun of your website. You want to give people an excuse to visit your website! Putting a creative spin on your name is your first step to ensuring your website does not get ignored.

Make it easy to type.
And easy to visualize, remember, and verbalize.

Make it brandable.
Building a distinct brand that stands out from your competitors begins with your brand and domain name. Keep in mind that most single-word domains are taken. So, you might need to create your own word. You can try merging two whole words like YouTube, using a phrase like Dollar Shave Club, tweaking a word like Reddit, affixing a word with a prefix or a suffix like Shopify, or making up a completely unique name like Zappos .

Try to avoid numbers and hyphens.
Using numbers and hyphens in your domain name is not an inherently bad decision, but it could present a roadblock for customers trying to visit your website. That’s because people often use hyphens incorrectly. Additionally, visitors may view your website as less reputable, aesthetically, by using characters not typically used in domain names.

.com, .net, .org, .co? Which extension should I use?
The .com domain is obviously the most popular choice for a domain name and it’s likely the best because it is the most common. However, at the end of the day, availability will be the biggest influencer on whether you should use .com as your domain extension, or something else. Because it doesn’t matter how good your domain name is if it’s unavailable! But, if you’re lucky enough to choose a domain name and the .com version is available, you should also look to purchase the .net and .org versions and redirect them to your website on the .com.

All of the factors we’ve discussed and the tips we have shared should be considered when you are choosing a domain name for your business. But, you should keep in mind that a domain name alone can’t make your website, but it can certainly break it. Also, remember to enable auto-renewal on your domain name.  You’d be surprised how many businesses lose their domain name because they forget to renew it.
